[…] you read my Positano Travel Guide, you know how last minute this trip to Southern Italy was for us. And because of this, a lot of […]
If I had to pick one word for Positano it would be: breathtaking. We booked this trip on a whim (my husband was traveling to Europe for work and I decided to tag along) and had very little time to plan this portion of our trip. Because of this, most restaurants, hotels and beach clubs were all booked or had slim pickings on availability. To be honest, it stressed me out and almost deterred us from going. However, my husband persevered and said these magic words, “if we only can stay one night, let’s make it happen..”. And so we did. Hopefully you find the below travel guide to Positano, Italy helpful whether you stay one night or one week!

How To Get To Positano
Train: There is no direct train to Positano, but you can take the train from either Naples Airport or Rome Airport to a closer city on the Amalfi Coast like Sorrento for easiest access to the area. If flying into Rome, take a train direct to Naples and then onto Sorrento. If you’re flying into Naples, take a taxi to the central train station and then train to Sorrento via the Campania Express. It’s a clean, air-conditioned and safe ride.
Ferry: During the day you can take a ferry to Positano from either Naples, Sorrento, Capri and Amalfi. Just make sure to note that luggage will have an additional cost to your ticket. If you choose this method of travel, make sure to try and purchase your ticket ahead of time and show up 45 minutes before your scheduled ferry.
Bus: The SITA bus service is the cheapest way to get to Positano. For 2Euro you can take the 45 minute bus from Sorrento to Positano. The views are beautiful and you’ll want to make sure to sit on the right side of the bus. I would only recommend arriving in Positano by bus if you do not have a lot of luggage, your hotel has a luggage courier and/or is near the bus stop.
Private Car: The most expensive, but efficient way to get to Positano is hiring a private car from Naples Airport to Positano. The cost is around 100E but definitely the easiest and most effective way to arrive and depart. I thought this was the best money we spent on this portion of our trip. We used Transferelax and they were easy to work with and amazing.
Where To Stay In Positano
For being such a small city, there are a lot of places you can lay your head at night! A few made the top of my list, mostly based on amenities, location and services. However, I would also strongly consider and advise looking on Airbnb, especially if you are planning to stay two or more nights in the area!
Le Sirenuse
Located at the top of the city, along one of the main roads is this small little slice of luxury. Before you arrive ask for an activities schedule and sign up for the complimentary two-hour boat tour, which they offer on their private boat. At first look, the price per night of this place will leave you in shock, but factoring in all the amenities (things you would need/have done on this trip anyway!) it comes close to evening out. At least that’s what I told Tyler…
Il San Pietro di Positano
Il San Pietro is the only hotel with it’s own private beach in Positano, and a hotel elevator will carry you down for direct access. From June to September, the hotel also offers a complimentary two-hour cruise along the coast (similar to Le Sirenuse) and you should plan to book this ahead of time for your stay. Amenities include a tennis court, swimming pool and breakfast.
Casa Buonocore
A sweet B&B tucked into the hills of Positano, this place simply oozes style, character and class. The Casa is a six room inn, includes breakfast with your stay and is run by the family which has owned it for over 50 years. They also offer a porter to help with your luggage, which you should plan to book ahead of time.
Palazzo Murat
Located in central Positano, Palazzo Murat was once home to the King of Naples. There is certainly an air of grandeur in the place and their courtyard is one of the best spots to relax in Positano. The hotel offers a complimentary boat tour, breakfast and has a pool onsite for guests to enjoy.
Things To Do In Positano
Eat, Drink, Shop, Relax, Repeat. Seriously. Positano is a cliffside village on southern Italy’s Amalfi Coast is a well-known holiday destination for locals and travelers alike. With a pebble beachfront and steep, narrow streets lined with boutiques and cafes this is a true destination to relax and take it all in..just make sure you also sprinkle in the following!
- Visit Santa Maria Church.
- Stroll through Positano’s art galleries.
- Have custom leather Italian sandals made for you.
- Take a boat tour along the coast.
- Spend the day at Fornillo Beach, a much less busy location which locals frequent.
- Spend a half day exploring Fiordo di Furore, a small nearby town.
Getting Around Positano And The Amalfi Coast
If your hotel does not offer a shuttle or boat taxi, below are your best options for transportation along the Amalfi Coast. I recommend taking the bus going (sit on the right hand side!) and the ferry coming back for any excursion to a more southern Amalfi coast town, this way you get to see the coastline by land and sea!
Taxi: This is a great option, just make sure to book ahead of time. It’s also the most expensive option, unless traveling with a group.
Bus: Both the SITA city bus and the Coast to Coast Sightseeing bus offer travel along the Amalfi Coast and is an easy way to hop around to the various towns.
Ferry: Travel Mar is one of the main companies that offers multiple ferries to the majority of towns. The cost varies from what town you’re visiting and/or headed to.
Walking: You’re probably very aware that there is a lot of steps and climbing involved in any trip to Positano! I also find it incredibly important to note that you must be in good health, able to walk countless steps at steep grades, and in good shape to travel to Positano. I personally would not recommend anyone with heart troubles, bad knees or hips and small children to travel to the area, know your limits!
