We spent a lot of time this past weekend visiting a few of the local produce farms in our area and as we were driving to our third (and last, to the delight of my hubs) stop, I suddenly remembered a recipe from my childhood and quickly added “apples” to my list. You see, growing up my parents had a small apple orchard in our backyard and every fall we had an abundance of apples. My mom would try to keep up with all of the apples by making fresh apple sauce, poached apples, apple jelly, apple bread… the list goes on and on. However, there was one recipe in particular the whole family could hardly wait for her to make and it was for Apple Betty. Be prepared, this is one delicious dessert that is incredibly simple to make, just be sure you have vanilla ice cream on hand before you start work on the best Apple Betty recipe you’ll ever find. Enjoy!
APPLE BETTY RECIPE
INGREDIENTS
- 4 cups thinly sliced organic apples
- 1/4 cup organic or fresh squeezed orange juice
- 3/4 cup  organic all-purpose flour
- 1 cup organic white sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon organic ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon organic ground nutmeg
- 1 pinch salt
- 1/2 cup (one stick) butter room temperature
DIRECTIONS
Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C) and lightly grease a 9 inch pie plate (this one is so pretty!). I like using this one as it is a bit deeper and easily fits all the apples and topping. You can also make this in small individual ramekins, and it will make 6.
Mound sliced apples in the pie plate and sprinkle with orange juice.
In a medium bowl (these are great with the grips), mix the flour, sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Cut in butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs and scatter over the apples. Anything that does not “fit”, press gently into the top of the apples.
Bake in preheated oven for 45 minutes. Serve warm with vanilla ice cream. Be prepared to be asked by your family to make this desert for the rest of your life.
