If you’ve been following along for a while, you know how much I love a good hotel. I may or may not obsess about every last detail before finally choosing the “perfect” place for us to stay, whether it be one night or seven. That’s why when we went to Portland, Oregon for the weekend, I spent an obscene amount of time choosing a new hotel to try out. I weighed all the pros and cons (location, perks, amenities…) and I did not miss a detail. Whether you’re a thread counter, bed snob, desire an unparalleled view of the cityscape, require a one block walk to the best coffee shop in town, or are toting along your furry bestie, there is a downtown Portland hotel for you. Without further ado, the following are my favorite downtown Portland hotels.
The Nines
With its lobby set eight stories above ground level smack dab in downtown Portland, you’ll be transported to a another world as soon as you enter. The Nines is a modern, stylish, high-touch luxury hotel located in the historic Meyer & Frank building in the heart of downtown Portland. And, thanks to their two onsite restaurants, Urban Farmer and Departure, which features one of the best rooftops in downtown Portland, you really will have no reason to leave. You could take the elevator home.
Pro Tip: Upgrade your room to “Club Level” and enjoy evening hor d’oeuvres, complimentary cocktails, wine and beer, plus a gourmet champagne breakfast in the morning.
The Heathman
Built back in 1927, this hotel is a well-loved landmark among locals which also happened to make a very impressionable cameo appearance in the book (and now movie) 50 Shades of Grey. Prior to it’s stardom, The Heathman has always been known for it’s opulence, prime downtown location and one-of-a-kind Afternoon Tea in their onsite luxurious downstairs tea court. None of this has changed, and in fact, recently the historic hotel underwent a face lift and is now bright, refreshed and better than ever.
Pro Tip: Ask for a room on an upper floor to avoid the city noise.
Marriott Waterfront
Across from the Willamette River, this polished Marriott Waterfront hotel in the city center is easy walking to Portland’s top sights. Service is par none, every single employee you meet you can see they enjoy their job and take pride in giving the best customer service possible. Having recently undergone a renovation, this hotel is bright and refreshed. Rooms are comfortable, spacious and well-appointed. With so many newer hotels in Portland, this hotel has been become my “old faithful”, I know that no matter what we can always count on a wonderful experience and perfect stay.
Pro Tip: Ask for a room facing the river for an unparalleled view. Additionally, consider upgrading your room to a “Club Level” to include deliciously creative evening hor d’oeuvres and a wonderful breakfast in the morning.
Sentinel
Anchored by the opulent Domaine Serene Wine Bar, the Sentinel hotel is perfectly positioned as it is steps from the streetcar line, Powell’s Bookstore, and some of the city’s best restaurants and food carts. This hotel does a beautiful job of retaining historic charm while still incorporating luxurious modern touches and amenities like a specialty pillow menu, a Salt & Straw ice cream menu for that midnight snack and an all-locally produced fully stocked in-room honor bar.
Pro Tip: If you feel like splurging, the suites on the top floor have private rooftop patios–perfect for lounging, reading, drinks, etc.
Hi-Lo, Autograph Collection
Perfect for a weekend stay, the Hi-Lo is one of the most popular Downtown Portland Hotels. This 120-room boutique hotel reshaped the Oregon Pioneer Building, the city’s first concrete structure from the turn-of-the-century. Here you will find the perfect intimate balance between a modern luxury stay and a true Portland experience. Walking distance to Pine Street Market and the infamous Portland waterfront, this hotel is specifically designed for artists, foodies and professionals alike.
Pro Tip: Enjoy a cocktail or meal in the onsite restaurant and be treated to a Portland hidden gem. Service is impeccable, cocktails balanced and food perfectly crafted.
The Duniway, Hilton Hotel
Just a quick walk from the South Park Blocks, Portland Art Museum and Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall, the Duniway is a sleek, classy downtown hotel named after Portland women’s rights advocate, Abigail Scott Duniway. The lobby is warm and inviting, the onsite fitness center well-appointed, and my favorite part – a gorgeous guests-only rooftop patio on the 11th floor.
Pro Tip: There is hardly a bad room at The Duniway, but request s a top floor premier King for the ultimate luxurious stay. Make sure you also try out the onsite bar, Jackrabbit Delicious food and beverages!
The Porter, Curio Collection
One of the newest hotels to grace Portland’s skyline, The Porter has modern, sumptuous accommodations and a rooftop bar with the best view Portland has to offer. We had one of the best nights of sleep at this hotel on a recent stay. The bed was extremely comfortable and the linens cozy.
Pro Tip: Consider upgrading your room for to an upper floor and enjoy water views. Or, take time to enjoy the workout facility which boasts a spa, heated pool and full gym.
The Dossier
Each of Dossier’s art-filled rooms and suites features locally-inspired amenities designed to bring the spirit of Portland into the hotel. This is a beautiful and perfectly located hotel, walking distance from Pioneer Square and downtown shopping. The amenities, ranging from the in-room Nespresso to the marble bathrooms with full sized tubs, you will have no problem completely decompressing from a busy day.
Pro Tip: Ask for a room with a sitting area, they tend to have a larger footprint. Additionally, make sure to hit the lobby earlier for some of their delicious complimentary coffee or enjoy breakfast at the onsite breakfast, the food is delicious!
That about rounds up my favorite downtown Portland hotels! Do you have a favorite hotel that I did not mention above? Please leave it in the comments below, as I’m always looking to add to my list.
Also, if you’re planning a trip to the Portland area and want to check out the Willamette Valley Wine Country, consider reading my post detailing the area here!
Full Disclosure: You did not see one Kimpton hotel which has made my list. That is not for a lack of insight, or distaste for the brand. We have found in the past two years that Kimpton needs to seriously invest in replacing their mattresses in their Portland hotels. On several occasions they were broken down and in need of serious attention. In being a reliable travel resource for you, I want your stay in Portland to be flawless and I cannot personally recommend any of their hotels at this time.
Happy Travels!
