If you read my Positano Travel Guide, you know how last minute this trip to Southern Italy was for us. And because of this, a lot of activities and hotels were fully booked which determined a lot of our decision-making. Best advice we did not follow for our trip to Capri, was to stay the night. You can definitely explore all of Capri in one day, but in the evening time when tourists head back to the mainland, it quiets on the island. Once the sun sets and the twinkling lights illuminate the narrow roads, Capri is absolutely magical. At least, that’s what my girlfriend said and I super wish we had experienced it! Nevertheless, our day trip to Capri was amazing and so I quickly put together this travel guide to Capri, Italy to make your next trip easy, breezy to plan!

How To Get To Capri
Ferry – You can easily catch a ferry to Capri from Naples, Sorrento and a lot of the towns along the Amalfi Coast. Check which ferry services the area you will be coming from and make sure to arrive well in advance of departure! Most all ferries arriving in Capri land at the Marina Grande.
Private Boat – If you’re only planning a day trip to Capri, this would be my personal choice as you will have the ability to create your own itinerary and not worry about ferry lines and tickets. You’ll also be able to tour around the entire island in your private boat leisurely, without having to get on a crowded tour boat and you’ll be first to arrive at very popular sites like the Blue Grotto. We used Sorrento Coast Charter. Davide was really friendly and easy to work with. He helped us plan the perfect full day trip to Capri and even arranged transportation for us when we were on land.
Group Boat Excursion – Since private boats are an expensive way to travel, unless you are with a larger group, this would be my second choice. I highly recommend using the company Mondo Tours to book this excursion, as they offer shared tours through the special link I provided. You can choose the day you’d like to go and they will pick you up from your hotel in Sorrento, take you directly to the boat, and return you back to your hotel at the end of the day. Only 12 people are booked per boat, keeping this experience intimate and informative. Lunch is provided and it’s a full day of sightseeing for a very reasonable cost.
*Travel Hack* When we were considering staying the night on Capri, we had planned to sign up for the Capri Tour through Mondo Tours as our mode of transfer to Capri and had inquired with the tour operator. The tour operator had said it would not be a problem. Had we gone with this option it would have been the perfect double dip. We would avoid the large crowded ferry and travel around the entire island with only a handful of other people, before being dropped at the Marina Grande to head to our hotel.
Where To Stay In Capri
Before we made a final decision not to stay for a night in Capri, I had poured through hotels and did quite extensive research. Below are my top four lodging options for staying in Capri.
Luxury Villa Excelsior Parco With a courtesy vehicle transport between the Marina Grande, a private beach club and the Piazzetta, you will not have to worry about your arrival to and from the Villa for your stay. This intimate boutique property also offers a welcome cocktail and complimentary breakfast, beach club access, concierge services and free use of a fitness facility.
Capri Tiberio Palace Just a few steps from the Piazzetta makes this hotel an ideal choice. There is an onsite pool and sundeck, spa, fitness center, restaurant and bar. Breakfast is included with your stay.
Capri Wine Hotel A very sweet, picturesque family run hotel offers a terrace overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea and is also the home to one of Capri’s first wineries. The extensive gardens provide a lot of the produce served at breakfast each morning, and are an enticing spot to relax and enjoy the view.
Hotel Scalinatella This hotel has a reputation for impeccable service and relaxed elegance. It’s also a ten-minute stroll from the Piazzetta and has an onsite pool, restaurant, bar and fitness center. The panoramic views are worth staying here alone!
Getting Around Capri
Capri Island has two main cities, Anacapri and Capri and you’ll want to see them both.
Bus The best, most cost-effective way of crossing the island from one town to the other is to take the public bus.
Funicular The runs between the Marina Grande port and the Piazzetta in Capri town above, taking just a few minutes to complete the trip.
Taxi While there are taxis, and they are very retro cool, they can be expensive to travel by and I would not recommend using this mode of transport on Capri.
Walk Capri town is very walkable, as is Anacapri, although I would not recommend you walk between the two, as this would take a long time. You could walk the Phoenician Steps between Anacapri and the Marina Grande, then take the Funicular up to Capri town, but plan accordingly!
Things To Do In Capri
- • Take a boat tour around the entire island.
- • Go inside the Blue Grotto. Advice: Go early when you first arrive at the island, usually the water is calmer and there are no lines.
- • Climb up Mount Solaro with the chair lift. Advice: As soon as you arrive at Marina Grande, head to Anacapri to beat the crowds and take the lift to the top of the island.
- • Visit the Church of San Michele.
- • Walk through the shops in Anacapri.
- • Walk through the shops in Capri town and have an afternoon cocktail in the Piazzetta.
- • Visit the Gardens of Augustus.
- • Make sure to have Capri’s namesake Caprese Salad! With some Prosecco, of course.
Most of all enjoy your travels!
