Not too long ago, I read a book discussing the benefits of being grateful and how writing down what you are grateful for each day had the power to change your life. I was sold! I mean what did I have to loose? Today, I’m sharing the four things I’ve noticed as improvements to my well-being just from the simple act of daily journaling my gratitude.
The Benefits of Being Grateful
Positivity
When you take the time to focus on the good things in your life you naturally become more positive. Writing down what you are thankful for will create more optimism within you because you are choosing to see the positivity in your life. Rendering negative emotions less powerful. By writing down four things you are grateful for each evening, you will eventually feel more positive emotions, relish in good experiences, and build stronger relationshipsâa recipe for a much happier life!
Tip:Â When I first began journaling I was using an old journal I had lying around. Honestly, I was not too motivated to write in it. I ended up upgrading my journal to this and keeping it on my bedside table. It’s attractive so I leave it there and then remember to journal each evening!

Self-Esteem
Keeping a journal is a very personal activity, but can be extremely rewarding. Journaling the four things you are grateful for each day will allow you to be present with your own achievements. Showing gratitude has been proven to reduce social comparisons, and by expressing what you are thankful for, you are less likely to be resentful towards others! When you have higher self-esteem, you’re more likely to go after that job promotion, or get outside your comfort zone more.
Sleep
Spending just 15-20 minutes before bed writing down a few grateful sentiments can help you have a much better nightâs sleep. By thinking of the positive experiences of the day or reminding yourself of what you have to be thankful for, you are much less likely to ponder over your worries and therefore clear your mind for a good nightâs sleep. No longer will you toss and turn with anxiety, or will your dreams be interrupted with worry and stress. You’ll sleep like a baby.
Sidebar: I also recently purchased this Coop Home Goods Eden Pillow and it has changed my life! All my neck and upper back pain has subsided and I hardly toss at night trying to get comfortable.
Stress Reduction
It’s a proven fact that grateful people take better care of themselves, meaning they tend to live healthier lives by exercising and eating well, and are therefore able to manage stress in a healthier way. Focusing on feelings of contentment and satisfaction naturally counters stress, and leaves you feeling much more grounded and able to deal with whatever life throws at you.
I hope this helps you in your life as much as it has helped me!
