Over the past few weeks I have been working on cleaning out my closet for Spring. You see, recently I was listening to a podcast that said that we only actually wear 25% of our clothes and that most of our wardrobes are stuffed full of outdated clothing. I honestly felt like all the fingers were pointing right at me and my closet. Over the past few years, I feel like I’ve done a much better job of selecting items that are classic and won’t go out of date as quickly, but truthfully there is still a lot of items I could easily let go of to make room for new! Just that thought alone created a calm, weightless feeling inside of me. Weird, right? Not so much. Apparently, with all that accumulated stuff, productivity decreases, anxiety increases and locating necessary items becomes challenging. To take it a step further, did you know that there is a theory which suggests the direct correlation clothing we wear actually changes our thought patterns. For example, whenever you wear that brand new sweater, you feel like a brand new woman (or man)? Crazy, right? Today, for Monday Motivation, I’m helping you begin to clear your closet, clear your mind and make room for some new items that will help you feel like a million bucks!
Clear Your Closet
Clothes represent our personal style and the image we want to project to the world, while hoarding old clothes tends to keep us linked to the past. Preventing us from moving forward with our lives. Keeping outfits we no longer like can even hold us back from showing the world our true, authentic selves. Nobody wants that! To get started, I’m going to take you on the path I have been following for the past few weeks now.
First, I laid all my summer clothes out on the bed. Some of which I tried on, if I felt a little wishy washy about them. I then would grab the hubs and ask him to be brutally honest about whether the outfit was still flattering. I repeated this whole pattern with winter and spring clothing items as well.
Next, I began to make piles of the clothing I could let go of which were in really good condition– these will either go to a charity shop, will be sold online or I might bring them to the local consignment shop. All the old things that were torn or stained, I tossed.
Last, I had three piles before me. Items I definitely want to keep, items I wanted to donate, and items I was a bit unsure about. If you also have a pile you’re unsure about, keep that pile for three months and, if you still haven’t worn them after that time, get rid of them.
Organize Your Closet
Now, from my steps above, I was left with piles of clothing (and shoes!) I really love. I then went ahead and put everything back into the wardrobe, in color order (on new hangers!) in specific groups like blouses, sweaters, skirts, etc. I am not kidding when I tell you that my neat and tidy wardrobe, makes me feel SO LIBERATED and FREE. The next morning after I was finally finished, getting dressed and ready was an absolute breeze! I was elated. My head felt clear and I was excited to find new pieces to compliment my “new” wardrobe.
