We’re all feeling stressed right now… and if you’ve caught yourself for one moment thinking you’re alone. You’re not. That’s why, for today’s Monday Motivation, I want to talk to you all about the power of journaling. Journaling can help prioritize problems, concerns and fears, making it easier to figure out and pinpoint what is truly bothering you. It also provides a space to work through any negative thoughts you might be having (right now especially!), giving you an outlet to openly “talk” and write, without worrying about what others might think. Journaling is a space for YOU to really focus on YOU, and that’s what’s really important right now. If youâre new to journaling, the concept may seem daunting, but here are a few helpful prompts to kickstart your journey.
First things first, purchase yourself a journal you love. Make sure it’s something you enjoy writing in that you’ll be motivated to pick up each day. Consider a few different key factors which might be important to you such as size, paper quality, cover style (hard vs. soft), or even whether or not you want daily journaling prompts, such as “Today’s Mood”, “To-Do List”, etc. I’ve included a few of my favorite journals at the bottom of this post.
Once you’re ready to sit down, walk yourself through a few of the following prompts to really get your journaling juices flowing.
1. Check in with yourself and how youâre feeling: When was the last time we checked in with ourselves? Use your journal as a tool for checking in with yourself each and every day. Explore how you feel, what your day was like, challenges you’ve been facing, or even positive things happening.
2. Reflect on your day: Journaling can help you thoughtfully reflect on your day and end on a closed/positive note. You can write about your actions, your interactions, the way the events in your day unfolded, what you accomplished, how your day felt. Whatever it is, journaling can help you close out the hours, and thoughtfully end your day.
3. Work through something that youâre going through: Each one of us has faced experiences that have left an impact on us, good or bad and journaling can serve as a tool to help you make sense of everything. Use your journal to really connect with what has been happening in your life. Your journal is a safe place for you to express and process emotions both current and past. A few questions I reflect on as I write are:
– Am I fearful of something?
– What tends to make me anxious? What activities do I enjoy which ease this anxiety, or are anxiety free?
– Is there a relationship in my life that needs word (this could be with a partner, friend or family member)?
4. Write unsent letters to individuals in your life: Writing letters without the intent of sending can be a very therapeutic and thoughtful practice. Consider writing a letter to someone in your past or present, maybe they have hurt your or, maybe they bring you extreme joy. Whatever you want to say to that person, write it out to them. Journaling an unsent letter can help you find closure on a subject or even with a person. It can also help you reflect on all gratitude you might have for that person being in your life and help you communicate all your thoughts.
