This Blog Post is all about my Hair Care Tips, Routine and Style Information!
Finding a Hair Stylist
Find a stylist can be a bit challenging, but finding the best fit for you is KEY. First, find a stylist who understands your hair and wants to work with it, instead of against it. Make sure to select a stylist who specializes in your hair color. Then, make sure the products they use are non toxic as possible, and won’t cause unnecessary damage. Always make sure they love their craft, are keeping with the trends and invested in continued education. You want a stylist that LOVES what they do.
– Who’s your hair stylist? Currently, my amazing stylist is located in Bend, Oregon and is named Shelbee. She works at Lush Salon in Bend and specializes in balayage and lived-in blondes. She is seriously phenomenal and I found her through my hunt on Instagram while looking for a new stylist with a specialty in blondes and a focus on maintaining a healthy head of hair! I also see Diala in Eugene, Oregon at Luna Salon in Eugene when I am not able to get over to Bend.
– How do I book an appointment with her? Currently, Shelbee is not taking new clients, however Diala is and you can find her information here!
– Where can I see some of the work she’s done? You can check out her work on her Instagram here. She is always posting client photos and is fun to follow — if only for inspiration!
– What to look for in a hair stylist when looking for a new one? I always start with checking their Instagram and looking through their prior work. Next, I read recommendations and reviews online. You can usually tell pretty quickly if someone will be able to give you the “look” you’re gearing towards. Keep this in mind- you will never get your “dream hair” with the first visit. It will take multiple visits to begin to see the look develop. So unless your new stylist is frying your hair the first visit, or gave you a horrid haircut, give it time to for the new “hair relationship” to develop, and be patient!
Hair Care Tips Q&A
Below I’m answering some of the questions I get asked most about my hair!
– What is your natural color? Medium dark, strawberry blonde, although when I was a child my hair was very white blonde!
– Has coloring your hair blonde ruined your hair at all? No, not really. My stylist uses really high quality products to help minimize the damage, and my daily hair care routine also helps minimize the damage. I rarely blow dry my hair, so the only hot tools I use would be a curling iron, wand or flat iron every few days.
– Do you get a full set of highlights every time? No, I only highlight the top portion (crown), sides, and add a few “pops” of blonde into the body to minimize the damage.
– What should we ask our hair dresser for if we want our color like yours? Ask for baby lights, with a root tap and champagne toner!
– Do you tone your hair? If so, how often and what do you use? Yes, they tone my hair every time I get my hair done (every 20 weeks usually). The toner color Shelbee and Diala used last time, which I loved, was called “Champagne”. I also use this purple shampoo or this purple shampoo at home every time I wash. They key for me to using a purple shampoo is to put some of my regular shampoo in my hand, and then blend about a teaspoon of purple into it before massaging it into my hair. I let it sit on my hair in the shower about 1-2 minutes before rinsing.
– Best home hair color to keep my gray roots covered? Honestly? I do not have gray hairs…yet…but L’Oreal has a great root touch up spray but it’s not permanent.
– How often do you cut your hair and what do you ask for? I usually cut my hair every time I get it highlighted, and sometimes I might go for an “in-between” refresh cut just to help remove any split/dead ends. Recently, I’ve been asking for a blunt cut/long lob.
– Thoughts on balayage? I love the balayage look, and it is definitely a lower maintenance type of style, which I also adore. You’ll notice, the way my stylist has colored my hair, as it grows out it creates a very low impact balayage look. I love this because it allows a nice grow out without the obvious lines! Meaning, I do NOT have to go to the stylist every 8 weeks for root touch ups or color!
Hair Care Routine
Maintaining a healthy main does not need constant visits to the stylists and salon. But you do need a great routine and great products. Below you’ll find some of my best hair care tips!
– How long do you go between washes? This might sound crazy, but usually 4-5 days! They key is “training your hair”. Years ago, I washed my hair every day, then slowly I started going two days, and then three and finally moved up to every 4-5 days. My hair does not get greasy anymore and it also is able to hold a style for longer!
– Tips on how to keep your hair from becoming greasy? Going longer between washes and using dry shampoo (this is my favorite!). I also use a silk pillowcase (like this one).
– Healthiest way to wear your hair at night? Free style, or in a loose braid or pony tail using a very soft band to secure.
– Tips for good scalp health? Once a month I will use a clarifying shampoo. Which help in removing the scalp buildup by eliminating all the residue on your scalp. Just note: Clarifying shampoos can’t replace your regular shampoo as they are extremely drying on your hair. Use them only a few times a month!
Hair Care Products
Let’s be real – Good hair products make a HUGE difference in how your hair looks and feels. Below I’m sharing my top rated hair care products, including the best hair oil to keep your hair sleek and moisturized!
– Which shampoo and conditioner do you use? I’ve always been a fan of Loma, Unite and Living Proof products. I am a firm believer that if you are going to color your hair, or use any kind of heat it’s totally worth investing in high quality products. If you apply any kind of color to your hair, it’s worth investing in higher-end hair care products. All of these brands offer an array of hair care products, but currently I’m alternating between this shampoo and conditioner and this shampoo and conditioner!
– Best shampoo and conditioner for hair growth/length? Hair growth and length starts from the inside out, so I recommend that if you’re looking for hair growth to make sure you’re taking all your vitamins, eating healthy and living a fairly toxin-free life. I also suggest trying Vital Proteins Collagen to help! Getting enough protein and nutrients in your diet is incredibly important to growing your hair, nails and keeping your skin glowing! These Vital Proteins also have Biotin in it which is essential for hair, skin and nail health.
– Best purple shampoo to keep your hair from getting brassy? My two favorites which I alternate between are this option and this option!
– Best Hair Oil? I’m loving the Unite UOil, it’s lightweight and won’t weigh your hair down. I suggest running some through your hair while it’s still wet and then letting your hair airdry and using the blow dryer. It’ll keep your hair nice and sleek.
– Best dry shampoo? By far this is my favorite dry shampoo! I love how lightweight it is, and easy to use – plus it never leaves any funky residue.
– Which blow dryer do you use? When I use a blow dryer, I have this blow dryer and I LOVE it. Everyone I’ve ever recommended it to raves about how great it is. It reduces drying time tremendously, and it’s supposed to be healthier for your hair.
– Which curling iron do you like best? I have two! One curling iron and one curling wand I recently purchased. I use the 1 1/4″ barrel curling iron and then this curling wand. I find that I gravitate more to the curling wand because I like the “look” it produces a bit better, but I love both equally!
– Which flat iron do you like best? I have owned this flat iron for almost 10 years now! It is by far my favorite and makes my hair super sleek with only one pass. It’s expensive, but totally worth it considering how long it will hold up with regular use.
– How do you get those kind of beachy waves you’ve been doing lately? First, I use this wand to create my curl and then I use this texturizing spray at the ends to create that “piece-y” look! I also really like this spray, but find that it works really well for my hair when I’m in dryer climates.
– Favorite hair mask? I have TWO favorites! This one, which with this hair mask you will notice results right away! And then this hair mask when I have time and want to really let it “set” for about an hour or more.
– Do you use a leave-in conditioner? YES! Every time I hop out of the shower after washing my hair, I use this leave-in conditioner which a hair dresser a long time ago recommended. It seriously helps detangle my hair, strengthen it & reduce frizz. I cannot live without it!
– Best shampoo & conditioner for dry hair? My hair is super dry during the summer! That’s why I love this shampoo and this conditioner.
