If you follow along on IG, you know the hubs and I are in the process of building a house… and along with a new house, comes new home decor and furniture! Let’s talk Target. I shop there way too often and always come out with more items than I initially plan for…. and I know I’m not alone in this! As much as I love my favorite big box retailer, you have to be careful when shopping for home decor at Target because there are lots of items that look great, but end up being cheaply made. It’s the sad truth. You definitely have to be selective because it’s easy to fall prey to bad choices (even though they are so cute!). Luckily, there are plenty of amazing finds that fit the budget, work great as filler pieces, while still looking high-end. First off, my favorite trick is to sprinkle less expensive (Target decor + furniture) items throughout your home alongside vintage or nicer, higher-end pieces for a more curated look. You see, if everything comes from one big box retailer, you’re whole ambiance will lean in that direction and not fully come together. So my last bit of wisdom is this… don’t go overboard at Target! I know it’s easy to do. Moderation is key…
Secondly, the best way to determine if an item will look like it came from Target once you get it home (versus a higher end designer store), is by analyzing the material. There is nothing worse than styling something in your space and immediately having to return it, or having buyers remorse because it looks cheap. This is completely avoidable by inspecting the material first. If it’s furniture, is it made with solid wood? If it’s ceramic, does it have a nice weight to it? If it’s a basket, make sure there are no frays.
Last, I personally like to stick to natural materials, classic shapes, and timeless items. These pieces will have more longevity over time!
