Yes. As a teenager I worked at the mall. But here is what I learned and took away from that experience. The perfect dupe to a Cinnabon. Yep! You’d better believe it! You see, every day I’d walk into the mall, on my way to work, I’d walk directly past Cinnabon…my mouth would water, the smell of the fragrant cinnamon filling the air. It was extremely hard to resist eating one every day- but I did, because at close to $5 a pop, my teenager budget could not afford it. Instead, it became my mission to create and perfect my own Cinnabon “dupe” recipe. It took a few failed attempts, but I finally knocked it out of the park, with the help of my trusty bread machine! Today, I’m sharing that exact recipe but with a fun spin and addition of fresh apple to create the ultimate easy apple cinnamon rolls. I can hardly wait for you to try this recipe.. I promise, they are just as delicious as they sound! ENJOY!
INGREDIENTS
DIRECTIONS
Dough: Place ingredients in the pan of the bread machine (I also love this machine!) in the order recommended by the manufacturer. Select dough cycle; press Start. After the dough has doubled in size turn it out onto a lightly floured surface, cover and let rest for 10 minutes.
Apple Filling: While the dough is rising, make the apple filling. In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the chopped apples, brown sugar, and nutmeg. Stir so the apples are coated in the butter and brown sugar. Cook until slightly soft, but not mushy, about 2 minutes. Remove from heat and set aside.
Additional Filling: In a small bowl, combine brown sugar and cinnamon. In a separate small bowl, melt your butter.
Making the Rolls: Next, roll dough into a 16×21-inch rectangle. Brush dough with 1/3 cup melted butter, next sprinkle evenly with your sugar/cinnamon mixture, last, sprinkle evenly with your apple filling. Roll up dough and cut into 12 rolls. Place rolls in a lightly greased 9×13 inch baking pan. Cover and let rise until nearly doubled, about 30 minutes. Meanwhile, preheat oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C).
Bake rolls in preheated oven until golden brown, about 15 minutes.
Frosting: While you’re cinnamon rolls are baking, melt the butter over medium heat in a small pan. Once melted, turn up the heat to medium high. Continue stirring and look for small golden bits that will start to settle on the bottom of the pan, this should take around 3 to 5 minutes and the butter will have a nutty aroma. Once this happens, take it off the heat and pour into a medium, heat-safe bowl to cool to room temperature. Using a stand mixer or hand mixer, beat together the brown butter and cream cheese until smooth and slowly add the confectioners’ sugar and mix until combined. Add the milk and vanilla extract and mix until thick, but smooth.
Spread frosting on warm rolls before serving. Enjoy!
