This Blog Post is All About a Weekend Getaway to Central Oregon
We started off with a stay at the stylish, modern SCP Redmond which is a stones throw from both Smith Rock State Park and Bend. It is a historic property, four stories high and topped by “The Rooftop”, a small-bite restaurant and bar with panoramic views of the Cascade Range, including Three Sisters volcanic peaks, Mount Bachelor, and even Black Butte! Then we headed down to the Sunriver Resort for some true R&R. We hiked, we spa’d,.. and a great time was had all around! So keep reading to plan your next weekend getaway to Central Oregon, one of the most romantic getaways in Oregon!
STAY
SCP Redmond – This delightful boutique hotel has only 49 guest rooms, and is tastefully decorated with a mindful, minimalist style, with a focus on sustainable and regionally-sourced materials. This property boasts a small gym, comfortable community spaces and is located in the downtown center of Redmond, Oregon. The SCP also offers two dining options for guests and their culinary team works with local purveyors to provide in-season, organic menu items as much as possible!
Sunriver Resort, Sunriver, OR
For the most magical fall wonderland experience, enjoy a weekend getaway just outside of Bend at Sunriver Resort. Offering 245 well-appointed hotel guestrooms, suites and chalets, as well as fully-furnished condos and luxury vacation home rentals, there is the perfect accommodation for anyone. The resort is an amazing fall destination, offering multiple golf courses, a brand new swim park and endless walking and bike trails to get out and explore. And, if you’re looking to come in the snowy season, this Resort offers plenty of winter activities including cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, tubing, ice skating, sleigh rides, everything you could want and more! This mountain resort is situated within a 3,300-acre community bordered by both the Deschutes National Forest with its towering ponderosa pines and abundant wildlife, and the refreshingly cool and clear water of the Deschutes River, perfect for SUP, canoeing, kayaking, white water rafting and fly fishing during the summer months. There is also an on-site spa, where you can spend the day getting pampered and is the perfect spot to unwind. Sunriver Resort is a great destination for couples and families alike as there is plenty to keep everyone entertained!
SIP
Stoller Wine Bar – Featuring over 40 wines from the Stoller line up of brands, including Stoller Family Estate, Chehalem, Chemistry, Canned Oregon and History, there is definitely a wine for everyone! We even enjoyed a few small bites during our visit including a cheese and charcuterie board which was delicious! Stoller Wine Bar even offered beer options and Riff Cold Brewed products. We had the best time and their outdoor space was warm and inviting! You could certainly tell people loved the atmosphere as it was busy from he time we arrived till the time we left.
Bledsoe Family Winery – Former NFL star Drew Bledsoe and his wife Maura, (who are also Bend residents) own Doubleback and Bledsoe Family wineries, which originally began in Walla Walla where Drew is originally from. If you’ve ever had the privilege of tasting at their Walla Walla tasting room, then you know how wonderful the wines are and how excited I was to finally experience their Bledsoe Family Winery in Bend. Every single wine we enjoyed from the rotating lineup that includes Elizabeth Chardonnay, Healy Rosé (my favorite!), Stolen Horse Syrah, Bledsoe Family Cabernet Sauvignon, and Bledsoe Family Wine was delicious! I personally adored the indoor/outdoor venue space which was comfortable and lively, and it was the perfect place to enjoy the rest of our day. YUM!
Va Piano Vineyards – Located in the Old Mill district of Bend, Va Piano makes the perfect mid-afternoon stop! Maybe I’m bias (my sweet friend Mauri runs the tasting room!) but I love the relaxed vibe and fun atmosphere of this tasting room, and the wines are always wonderful! Whether you’re looking to try a tasting flight, or sit down and enjoy a glass, each wine is easy drinking and delicious. My personal favorites include their Rosé, Cabernet Franc and Walla Walla Syrah!
Immersion Brewing – This family owned, independent craft beer spot located in the heart of Bend, is a full-scale brewpub with food and 30 beers on tap. It is one of my favorite spots in the area. Their beers are top-notch, their service exceptional and the food delicious! We ended up sharing a sampler tray, two pints and their pub pretzels. Yum!
EAT
REDMOND
Terra Kitchen – We had one of the BEST meals we’ve ever had at this newly opened little spot next to the SCP Redmond hotel. A true field-to-table restaurant offering a locally-grown and locally-sourced dining experience, Terra Kitchen was established to nourish soul (wellness), community (local sourcing) and planet (sustainability). We ordered the Paella, which was served with house-made sourdough break, and the Asparagus appetizer. It was delicious, fresh and seriously flavorful!
The Rooftop – We enjoyed refreshing craft cocktails one evening at The Rooftop (located at the top of our SCP Redmond hotel), and also ordered a few small-bite plates showcasing the seasonal bounty of the area. A definite must-do while in the area as the views alone were worth the visit!
SUNRIVER
Sunriver offers a variety of indoor and outdoor dining options with restaurants for every occasion. Below I’m rounding up a few of my favorites that you definitely do not want to miss!
Sunriver Brewing Co. – The Great American Beer Festival recently awarded this local brew company as best small brewer of the year. After trying their selection of original craft brews it’s easy to see why. Head brewmaster Brett Thomas prides himself in producing well balanced brews of the highest quality. Come by and try the signature “Rippin” Northwest Ale or grab a glass of “Fuztail” Hefeweizen, but don’t leave without enjoying their General Tso Fried Cauliflower or, their Bacon Brew Burger! YUM!
Brewed Awakenings in Sunriver, OR – If you’re on the hunt for exceptional baked goods and breakfast sandwiches, coffee and tea drinks, this is the place! This family-owned coffee shop offers hand-roasted artisan coffee which will quickly become the best part of your morning! Just don’t forget to grab a few bags for home!
BEND
Sparrow Bakery – This bakery is a true gem. From the fresh baked pastries, the breakfast and lunch sandwiches to the perfect coffee drinks.. everything is always delicious and well prepared. Make sure you order at least one of their signature Ocean Rolls (thank me later!) with whatever coffee creation feeds your soul while you’re there, and if you’re staying for lunch make sure to try the Monte Cristo! My mouth is still watering.. it was so yummy!
Spork – Once an Airstream food cart cruising the streets of Bend, Spork is now a casual and vibrant restaurant featuring Mexican eats, Asian fusion plates and craft cocktails in a stylish venue, all made with fresh, locally sourced ingredients.
Bos Taurus – This boutique, chef-driven American steakhouse is situated in the heart of downtown Bend, Oregon and located in a modern-industrial building featuring high-end, thoughtfully sourced cuts of meat, craft cocktails and a selection of local wines. My favorite dinner option in the area!
EXPLORE REDMOND
Summer is nearly here, and with it comes warm days, long nights, there are plenty of ways to experience Redmond to the fullest. Whether you’re looking to relax and sample local snacks and sips, explore pristine Oregon hiking trails, or immerse yourself in Redmond’s unique culture and history, I’ve got you covered!
Cline Falls – A short drive from the hotel is Cline Falls, a short 1.2 mile hike that is good for all skills levels. Make sure to head out early in the morning to breathe in the fresh air and take in the spectacular sights of the rushing water at Cline Falls. It’s the most beautiful way to start your day!
Smith Rock State Park – Lace up your hiking boots or sneakers and explore your way through Smith Rock State Park. With multiple hiking trails, climbing options and even fishing access, this is the place to experience sweeping canyon views, rugged rocks to climb, and plenty of room to roam.
Downtown Redmond Galleries + Shops – The recent renaissance in downtown Redmond has led to a greater appreciation for art and culture. From fine art, to decor, to one-of-a-kind gifts and unique objects, Redmond’s shops and galleries showcase the work of a deeply artistic community. It’s a great way to feel inspired and really get a “sense of place” in this growing community!
EXPLORE SUNRIVER
For those who want to stay close and not leave Sunriver, there are plenty of places to ride bikes or nearby trails to walk. No matter what season, I love going for long walks in the morning, and during summer months I enjoy bike rides during the late afternoon before we head out for dinner. If you like lounging by the pool, the SHARC’s indoor play area has a huge hot tub for adults and a heated play pool for the kids, whereas during summer months you can enjoy the various outdoor pools and activities! Just don’t forget to make a stop at Goody’s, where they have been crafting handmade chocolates and ice cream with fresh, local ingredients in Central Oregon since 1984, for a sundae or ice cream cone.
Off-campus, one adventure along the Hwy 97, which you surely do not want to miss, is a stop off at Lava Lands Visitor Center and State Park to walk the Trail of Molten Land and the Trail of the Whispering Pines. The 5.5 mile Sun-Lava paved path is an accessible and scenic hike to the top of Lava Butte for a spectacular view of Central Oregon. Absolutely breathtaking! If weather allows, consider a picnicking under the pines, or attending one of the seasonal ranger talks. The terrain is similar to that found on the moon – so it’s no wonder the Apollo Astronauts practiced their lunar walks here!
The High Desert Museum is another great stop for the whole family, or as a couple and can also be found along Hwy 97. There are exhibits, both indoors and out, that provide insight on the region’s past, present and future. It’s one of my favorite places to idly spend the afternoon learning about a little piece of Oregon’s history, the regions terrain and the animals that inhibit it.
