For the longest time I struggled with how to wash fruits and vegetables. In our household, we try to be very conscientious and limit the chemicals we use, however I could not find a store-bought produce which was without a lot of added junk. Considering that even organic produce may come in contact with some sort of pesticide, it’s important to wash all your produce in order to remove excess dirt, pesticides and bacteria prior to consumption.
With summer’s bounty overflowing our grocery stores and farm stands, I thought this would be the perfect time to share the two methods I use to wash our fruits and vegetables. I feel confident you’ll love it! It’s so easy!
Fruit and Vegetable Wash
- 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar – this is my favorite
- 1/2 cup lemon juice – I prefer to use fresh, but if you want to use prepared lemon juice, make sure it’s only lemon juice and has no other ingredients. Like the one linked.
- 1/2 cup water
Add ingredients to a clean glass spray bottle and shake to combine. Store in the fridge in-between uses.
To wash your produce, spray each piece with your cleaner and place all the produce (uncut) in a bowl (with ample room at the top). Fill the bowl with water to rinse the cleaner from the produce. Once produce is thoroughly rinsed, it’s ready for consumption!

If you’re in a hurry and don’t have the wash mix handy, simply use apple cider vinegar . Fill a bowl with the fruit and vegetables you want to wash. Take a 1/4 of apple cider vinegar and add to the bowl. Fill the bowl to the top with water and let produce soak 5 minutes prior to rinsing and utilizing.
