Thanks to smartphone technology, planning travel has gotten even easier! Below, I have pulled together the travel apps I love and use the most. If you have a favorite, not mentioned in the below list, leave a comment on the bottom! I always love finding new faves!
Kayak – This well-known travel app is the best place to start when you’re researching hotels and flights for upcoming travel. Get an idea of the best days to take off using the plus or minus 1-3 day feature. This way, you can get the best price around the time frame you are thinking of departing.
Hopper – Once I use Kayak to get an idea of flight prices in combination with my decided travel dates, I plug them into Hopper. This app will send you alerts when there is a price reduction on the flight you are watching. I used this app most recently to score a roundtrip ticket to Europe for $532 direct on Business Class!
Skyscanner – When it comes to finding the best prices for flights, look to this search engine and app. Whether you’re searching for flights from the USA to Hawaii or you’re simply trying to get from Germany to Italy, Skyscanner will find the best prices available for flights!
WhatsApp – This is a great messaging service that you can use while traveling abroad. WhatsApp is easy to use and economical in regards to data costs. Simply add your friends and family to contact, and you’ll be able to call, video chat, send messages, images, voice memos and files just like on your iPhone or Android in the US without the extra cost through your cell service provider!
Google Maps – The most accurate and well-rounded map for iPhone and Android. It’s quick and simple to understand, and works well worldwide. It uses very little data and even when you’re not connected to WiFi, it still can guide you to where you want to go if you have preloaded the destination.
Google Trips – This is newer in my lineup of apps, but has quickly proved its worth in efficiency alone! The app gathers all the travel information from your Gmail account, storing it offline so you’ll have access to it with or without Wi-Fi. Additionally, it offers customized tours, guides and maps, and shows restaurants and monuments nearby to where you’re traveling to.
Packing Pro – I downloaded this app before our last trip and it was a game changer. It helps you organize your suitcase with a checklist that breaks it all down by category. You can tell the app how many days you’ll be gone, where you’re going and what the weather will be like. You can choose to add other relevant info, like if you’re going to a beach or pool resort and if you’ll have a washing machine available. The app will then customize a tentative list of clothing, footwear and other necessities!
Rick Steves Audio – One of the most overlooked travel apps by Millennials and/or Gen Z’s is this travel app which organizes Rick Steves’ huge library of self-guided walking tours and radio interviews into geographic playlists covering Europe’s top sights, travel tips, and cultural insights. Make sure to download this app before you leave, and download the corresponding walking tours, points of interest details, etc. of where you’ll be traveling, you’ll be less stressed and informed!
XE Currency – This app provides live, up-to-the-minute currency rates, which you can store to quickly reference while offline.
Mobile Passport – Download this now if you’re planning any international travel. This app helps U.S. citizens and Canadian visitors expedite entry by submitting passport and declaration information via mobile device. With the app, you simply create a profile, answer trip questions, submit to U.S Customs and Border Protection (CBP), receive an encrypted barcode, walk right through customs.
The app is free, secure to use, does not require pre-approval, available on iOS/Android, and only works over your cellular network or Wi-Fi. Although the app is authorized by U.S Customs and Border Protection, the app does NOT replace your passport. Always bring it with you!
Once you have downloaded all the above apps and have begun to pack! Use my Favorite Travel Credit Cards Guide to help you plan the next step of your travels!
