The best wineries near Walla Walla are either found right downtown, where there are dozens of tasting rooms walking distance from one another, or are found at their estate vineyards, approximately a fifteen minute driving radius from the city center. Most all wineries in Walla Walla are known for their dedication to quality and craftsmanship. The region has gained a reputation for producing world-class wines, particularly the red varietals that thrive in the area’s distinct climate and soil. With an emphasis on sustainable farming practices and hands-on winemaking techniques, the winemakers in Walla Walla are passionate about creating wines that reflect the unique character of the region. Below I’m sharing our detailed itinerary for our two day, one night stay in Walla Walla!
GIRLS WEEKEND WINE COUNTRY GETAWAY ITINERARY
DAY ONE
Arrive to Walla Walla via KinectAir flight.
Tasting and lunch at Caprio Cellars
Easily one of our favorites in the area, Caprio Cellars certainly knows the art of hospitality and producing high quality wines. From the moment we arrived, we were greeted with sparkling wine and made to feel like part of the Caprio Cellars family. We enjoyed our wine tasting accompanied by exquisitely prepared scratch made, seasonally driven plates by their Executive Chef and ended our visit with a vineyard tour. Their picturesque tasting room on Walla Walla Valley’s south side is just 10 minutes from the heart of downtown and boasts a 360-degree picturesque view of the Walla Walla Valley, the perfect backdrop for our tasting.
Tasting at Va Piano
Located on the southside of beautiful Walla Walla, with stunning views of the Blue Mountains in the midst of the vineyards, Va Piano is all about slowing down and enjoying the best of life. And enjoy we did! We felt as though we had been transported to the Tuscan countryside the minute we arrived. We were treated to a leisurely tasting with owner and winemaker Justin Wylie, complete with vineyard views, cheese and charcuterie and a delicious tasting through some of their signature wines including Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Sauvignon Blanc and Rose, where each bottle easily captured the best characteristics of the region. Our favorites were the the Sauvignon Blanc and Syrah.
Tasting at Pursued by Bear
Our last stop for the day was to Pursued by Bear, and their newer tasting room which is both walking distance from downtown Walla Walla and our hotel. Started by actor Kyle MacLachlan, Pursued by Bear began as a love for his home state, a desire to stay connected to family and as a channel for his interest in wine into a second, equally satisfying professional pursuit; the craft of winemaking. A native of Yakima, Washington, Kyle grew up in close proximity to the vineyards where his grapes are now grown. Obviously we were disappointed to not meet the actor himself, but his wines easily made up for it! We tasting through some of the most delicious red wines, which showcased the perfect balance between Old World and New World styles. Our favorite was the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon.
Check into The FINCH
Dinner at TMACS
TMACS was originally opened in 2005 as T.Maccarone’s, and quickly became known for its understated luxury balanced with a family atmosphere and sophisticated menu. It was the perfect spot for our dinner, bringing all the flavors of the valley to our table. And, whether you’re craving a glass of wine or craft cocktail to go along with your dinner, you’ll be covered. This gorgeous restaurant is a small, elegantly casual spot offering locally sourced, seasonal creations. We absolutely adored their Brussels Sprout salad filled with apples, bacon, pistachios, mint and sage as a starter and the Beef Tenderloin, medium rare as our main. Both were made to perfection and delicious!
DAY TWO
Breakfast at Maple Counter Cafe
We started our day with breakfast at Maple Counter Café and let me just give you one piece of advice: go hungry! Their menu features everything from classic breakfast platters to apple pancakes (YUM!), and are known for their gourmet breakfasts which are made-from-scratch with local ingredients. Easily one of the best breakfasts we’ve ever had and we cannot WAIT to go back!
Explore Downtown Walla Walla
After breaktfast we enjoyed a leisurely walk downtown, boutique shopping and exploring the Marcus Whitman, the landmark hotel in downtown Walla Walla that opened in 1928, and its art collection. We easily could’ve spent a few hours just taking in all the sights, but we had our next wine appointment to get to!
Tasting at Doubleback
Bledsoe Wine Estates was founded by legendary NFL quarterback Drew Bledsoe and his wife, Maura, who returned to his hometown of Walla Walla and teamed up with renowned winemaker Josh McDaniels to create a family of outstanding wine brands. Doubleback winery is set southwest of downtown Walla Walla and is home to their nationally acclaimed Cabernet Sauvignon. We enjoyed an intimate tour of the property, and a sit down tasting of Chardonnay and two different vintages of Cabernet Sauvignon complete with a delicious cheese board. It was absolutely exceptional, and very private as they only host three to four tastings per day, meaning all the attention is on you and the wine! Our group favorite was the Chardonnay and the Estate Reserve Cabernet.
Lunch & Tasting at The Walls
For lunch we decided to combine wine tasting and lunch at The Walls and it was the perfect choice! With incredible indoor and outdoor spaces, The Walls is definitely not to be missed and was one of our favorite experiences! First let’s talk wine. The Walls and PASXA wines sure dedicated to producing wines that tell the story of their roots. Whether sourced from some of the best vineyard sites in the PNW or grown on their estates within the famed Walla Walla Valley, each wines captures a sense of place and showcases the unique characteristics of the land from with they came. We enjoyed a full tasting of eight different wines, plus a perfectly paired artisan cheese and charcuteries board, freshly curated Mediterranean salad and wood fired pizza fresh from their pizza oven. Some of our favorite wines included Martin’s Gold Chardonnay and Curiositas Cabernet Sauvignon which were delicious!
Tasting at SMAK
SMAK Wines is a woman owned, Rosé-exclusive producing winery and easily tops our list for wineries to visit in Walla Walla. Fiona Mak, owner and winemaker, is passionate about Rosé and believes that it does not need to simply be limited to one season – it can be year round. A belief we were 100% supportive of. Each wine created reflects the seasons – Spring, Summer, Fall/ Winter. The tasting room changes with the seasons as well, creating fitting atmospheres for their wines to be showcased. SMAK will bring you the ultimate rosé experience. It is more than just wine, it is setting a sense of place, a mindset, a lifestyle. If you love a delicious Rosé, then make sure you stop into SMAK Wines, you will be so glad you did!
Fly home via KinectAir flight!
