As of last week, my husband and I (for the health and safety of both ourselves and others) are officially working from home. First off, I have to just say, working from home is not always easy, especially when one of us (I’m pointing right at my husband! Ha!) is used to working from a collaborative office setting. Today, I’ve rounded up my best practices for keeping on track and operating efficiently despite distractions (and all things considered). Here is how to stay sane working from home!
KEEP UP YOUR WORKOUT ROUTINE
Just because you are now working from home, this should not change anything about how you spend your time outside of the 9 to 5 schedule. If you usually work out in the morning like we do, keep doing so! Now that we are homebound, we’ve been streaming workouts and going for walks, making sure to keep active and in a similar routine.
CHANGE OUT OF YOUR PAJAMAS
Changing out of your pj’s is absolutely essential to feeling and staying productive. Even if your new “work wardrobe” consists of leggings and a sweater, keeping up this habit of getting “work ready” will signify the change in your day to work hours. Below are a few of my favorite pieces that I often times wear at home during the work day!
PLAN OUT YOUR SCHEDULE
My girlfriend has been home-schooling her kids for the week, but when she showed me her kids school schedule, I was impressed! She had created a color coded schedule for the kids to refer to. It had everything from “Morning Reading” to “Recess” and even “Lunch” scheduled all in. This schedule created accountability not only for her, but structure for the kids! Consider doing the same thing for yourself. I personally have my day broken up into different segments, it helps with consistency and productivity!
NEVER WORK IN THE BEDROOM
Make sure to keep the bedroom a sanctuary for relaxation and sleeping!
TAKE ACTIVE BREAKS
Just as you would take routine 10 minute breaks here and there throughout the day at the work office, make sure you do the same thing at home! Get up, go outside, take a 10 minute walk or go to the kitchen and fix yourself a snack. These breaks will help refresh your mind and make you more productive, instead of burning out!
MAINTAIN REGULAR MEETINGS
Meetings are definitely more difficult via phone or video conference, however, it’s important to stick to the set times and be an active participant in the meeting. Make sure to also continue your in-office communications, text your work friends, and keep conversations open in order to inspire creativity and keep a sense of normalcy! I’ve linked a few of my favorite regular and noise canceling headphones to be considerate of your significant other in case they are also working from home!
DO CHORES AND TAKE ADVANTAGE OF DOING THINGS YOU NORMALLY CANNOT
Go ahead, get that load of laundry started and start the dishwasher. Make yourself a nice, hot lunch and take a walk. Embrace the extra freedom to be able to get chores done during the day and pamper yourself a little bit. You’ll get more done and feel loads more productive. That’s a WIN in my book!
I hope you’ve enjoyed these tip to staying sane working from home!
Not working from home? Maybe dedicate some time to some in-home pampering or spring cleaning! Happy Motivation Monday!
