How do you detox after travel?
I try to eat pretty healthy (80% of the time, 20% is fully devoted to chocolate!), but when I travel for work or play…that all kinda goes out the window. It’s hard to stay on track when you’re eating out every day, not drinking enough water or even exercising. More than likely you also probably haven’t been sleeping as well as you do in your own bed, you’ve been staying up later, drinking more, plus you might have even had to battle a time change leaving and returning from your trip. Travel can be rough! It can wreak havoc on your body and by the time you get home, I bet you’re excited to get back into your routine. I know I am!
To help me kickstart my body back into shape, I usually follow a 4-7 day detox-type of plan. It’s not difficult, but it really helps! It covers all the basics, hydrating, eating healthy, sweating it out and getting plenty of sleep!
Before I even get home, I make a grocery list of all the healthy things I plan to stock my fridge and pantry with. This includes tons of raw veggies, salad fixings, healthy dips like hummus and tzatziki, fresh fruits, almond milk, lemons, celery juice and lean meats. Then, I hit the grocery store on the way home from the airport. If I’m too tired, I’ll log everything into my Instacart.com account and hit “shop” as soon as I walk through the front door.
The PlanÂ
Every morning when I wake up, I have a glass of either hot or cold lemon water. Lemon is amazing at detoxing your system and helping your body reset.
I then hit the gym or go for a 45 minute walk and when I return home, I have a 16 oz glass of celery juice on an empty stomach, or a cup of peppermint tea. Both celery juice and peppermint tea are great for inflammation and restoring your gut to its optimal balance.
For more information on celery juice benefits, consider reading The Medical Medium. And, if you’re strapped for time and do not want to make your own celery juice, I recommend ordering from Juice from the RAW. That way, the juice will be on your doorstep when you arrive home and they are organic cold-pressed.
In the evening, after dinner I’ll have a cup of green tea or dandelion tea. Both of these are amazing at reducing inflammation and helping your body digest. Sometimes I’ll go for a short walk but right before I go to bed, I do some stretches to calm my mind and get me ready to sleep. I’m usually in bed before 10:00 pm!
It’s probably good to note for this week I usually avoid alcohol and sweets. Whomp.
Below is an example of my meals!
Breakfast
About an hour after my morning cup of lemon water and peppermint tea or celery juice, I’ll begin prepping for breakfast. Each morning for the next 7 days, I’ll make a green smoothie. I use one frozen banana, 1 cup almond milk, 2 cups of mixed smoothie greens or spinach, and then add in 1 scoop Vital Protein Unflavored Collagen Peptides.
Lunch
This will generally be a big salad topped with tons of colorful veggies, and a lean protein like chicken or ground turkey. I’ll finish lunch with another cup of hot lemon water or peppermint tea.
Dinner
During my “Detox Week” I only have meat during lunch and plan my dinners to be fully vegetarian. We often times will make a veggie stir fry to go over riced cauliflower, or eat steamed broccoli, a salad with avocado and baked sweet potatoes.
Snacks
I’m a snacker! I’ll have almonds, cashews, and walnuts as a quick on the go snack, or I’ll dip some carrots or broccoli in hummus to tide me over till the next meal.
So, I’m totally not a nutritionist or doctor, but this is a great plan that works super well for me and maybe it’ll work for you too! I’d love to hear what you do to “recover” from vacation and get back on track! Please leave me your ideas and tips and tricks in the comments below!
